What is phishing?
Phishing is a fraudulent attempt to obtain your personal and financial information. Often phishing attempts occur via Email, but they can also happen just while surfing the Internet too. Phishing attempts appear to be information requests from a legitimate source, probably one that you trust. Phishing emails and websites appear to look just like the real ones.
My Monster
I have experienced phishing firsthand. Back before I had this job and I was on the hunt for employment, I used monster.com for job searching. I received an email that appeared to be from Monster.com asking me to install something on my computer that would help keep my job search process safe...really!? Clicking the link would have installed malware on my computer. Fortunately, a grammatical error in the email made me think twice about clicking any link, but would that have stopped everyone? Maybe not.
So how can you protect yourself?
There are a few simple steps you can take to keep your personal information safe online.
- As a general rule, never send personal, confidential, or financial information by email.
- Be suspicious of communications intended to upset or excite you into taking immediate action.
- Make it a habit to open your web browser and type a company’s URL rather than clicking links contained in an email.
- Always ensure that your web browser is up to date and security patches are regularly applied.
