Every four years the Winter Olympics come back around and immediately everyone gets mildly interested in curling or ice skating or the Jamaican Bobsled Team. However, this time around it seems that Olympic fans are really excited about ice hockey. Maybe it was the USA vs. Russia game that went to a shootout that got others interested. Maybe it was the US and Canada rivalry excitement in women's hockey. Who cares. As long of others learn what a great sport hockey is, we all win. Personally I grew up in a area that was not interested in hockey at all. The closest team was the Pittsburgh Penguins and then later, the Columbus Blue Jackets. Even with the excitement of the early 90s Penguins, I was never really a fan until I moved to the Pittsburgh area and started to watch the game regularly; even eventually attending my first game. (I have been to a few more games since.) With the excitement that the addition of more outdoor games has brought this season and now the Olympic attention, more and more non-hockey fans are buzzing about the game. While the Olympics will be over in just a few days, I hope that the love of hockey lasts much longer for those new to the sport.
