Putting the internet to work for you. Sounds like a bad tagline for a tech company. Well, it is not a tagline, but rather a truth when it comes to one of the more unique online services you can find. IFTTT (which stands for If This Then That) is a service that links many of your existing online services and networks together and gives you new functions. For example, I have an IFTTT 'recipe' that will take any link that I post on my Facebook timeline and create a note in a special Evernote folder. I discussed this service briefly in a previous article, but with the recent addition of the new iOS app for iPhones and iPads, I thought it was worth another mention. The basics of the service really include linking all of your channels (which can include everything from social networks like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, to cloud services like Evernote, Dropbox, and much more.) You then create recipes which link two services together. There are currently over 100,000 different recipes that you can browse and customize. The new iOS app, which is their first mobile application, makes it even easier to create and discover new recipes, as well as editing existing ones. With this app comes the ability to tie directly into your iOS Contacts, Reminders and Photos. I created a recipe that will create a new note in an existing Evernote folder for every new contact that is created on iPhone. This creates an instant contacts backup that I can access on other devices or computers. The possibilities are wide open with this services as they continue to add new services, as well as tangible products like color changing light bulbs and power outlets that can work with your Wifi network to automate parts of your home. A recent Fast Company article highlighted the companies two and a half year history and discusses what more to expect from IFTTT.
