We are smack in the middle of vacation season. I myself am just a week away from disconnecting for a few days, enjoying some much needed away-time with family. We all know that the actual vacation week seems to fly by faster than a typical work week. So, with all the prep work and catch up work surrounding a vacation, you often ask yourself 'is it worth it?'
Of course it is!
A recent Fast Company article lays out some tips to making sure the pile-up of work from being away for a week or two, doesn't make the actual time away not worth the reward. There are some great tips that might seem counter-intuitive to vacation, but they help to reduce your worries and make re-entry into the workforce smooth sailing. One of my favorites is #2, setting boundaries you can live with. Checking urgent email or doing a bit of work throughout the week can ease your own mind, keep big issues from snowballing and ensures you have a job to come back to.
Other tips include keeping your Out-Of-Office message on an extra day; giving yourself a 'free' day to get caught up without the expectations of being available like your normally would. Another idea is to schedule something fun after that first day back. This makes that switch from bathing suits and board-shorts to business suits and boardrooms a little more tolerable.
One tip that I didn't agree with was deleting most of your emails that weren't urgent. Personally I manage my inbox very well and file or delete these non-urgent issues as they come in. However, someone who doesn't normally do this might not be able to handle the backlash of deleted emails. Good luck and enjoy your vacation!
