Have you caught World Cup Fever yet? After a surprising win last week and the wild US game yesterday,  Americans are starting to enjoy a sport that many are not that familiar with. Every four years, as the World Cup comes back around, new fans are introduced to the game that is tops with the majority of the world. shutterstock_199518749While soccer (futbol to everyone else) has been in the country in the form of youth sports, college sports and even the MLS, it is always overshadowed by Baseball, Football, Basketball, Hockey (and even NASCAR.) Even when the US plays soccer in the Olympics (on the other even years), it is overshadowed by the number of other events. Right now, with only baseball to compete with, World Cup is it. As a former player of youth soccer and appreciator of the game my whole life, I am loving seeing non-traditional soccer fans enjoying the game. I don't expect it to ever have the dominance of baseball and 'American Football,' but I do hope that in another four years, the energy is just as high.  After the first full year of British Premier League on NBC Sports introducing Americans to the best showcase of futbol athletes and the constant coverage of the World Cup, soccer may finally start to get the respect it deserves in the US. With a win or draw (or even a loss with other circumstances) against Germany, US would be on to the round of 16. World Cup Fever would be in full swing at that point.
