According to Jonathan Bradley of Fox Sports, this rivalry is said to have originated on the Conan O’Brien show in 2015 when McGregor was discussing Mayweather, McGregor stating “If we were to get it on, I would certainly dismantle him”. Things then continued to heat up via trash talk in person and through social media until the fabled fight was officially announced in June. Exchanges escalated further during their world tour in which the badmouthing snowballed in intensity.
“Floyd 'Money' Mayweather is widely considered to be one of the greatest boxers of all time,” says Callum Davis of The Telegraph. Mayweather has won 15 title belts and carries an astonishing record of 49 wins and 0 losses, with 26 wins by KO. In 2015 Mayweather announced his retirement but has since returned to face “The Notorious” Conor McGregor. An excellent thrower of fast and hard combos, he is an elusive fighter who is very hard to hit. The big question on everyone’s mind, at 40 years old, will he be able to keep up with a much younger and enthusiastic challenger (Conor is 29).
Conor “The Notorious” McGregor is a talented and popular mixed martial artist from Ireland, boasting a record of 21 wins to 3 losses, with 18 coming from KO. He has never been (T)KOed, and has only lost via submission, an important note in regards to the terms of the fight, which will be boxing as opposed to MMA. In addition to a solid ground game, Conor is known as an excellent puncher who wields substantial power in both hands. It will be interesting to see how Conor uses his age, 2” reach and height/weight advantage in a ring versus an octagonal cage.
The bout is scheduled to last 12 rounds. Both fighters will come in at 154 pounds and will wear 10-ounce gloves. With Money and Notorious considered the cream of the crop in their respective combat sports, it’s difficult to say who will be the one left standing. Regardless of the outcome, this is one for the record books. Don’t miss it live on Armstrong On Demand!
