Regrettably, 22 veterans take their own lives every day. To some veterans, a medical service dog can make all the difference. Armstrong is proud to be a part of Healing Heroes, a partnership launched on Veterans Day 2016 with
Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs
in an effort to raise money for five service dogs costing about $22,000 each to train and obtain.

Up to 30% of troops returning from deployment will experience some form of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This condition can seriously affect our veterans’ day-to-day activities and wellbeing, making it very difficult for them to resume normal lives. Medical service dogs could be the key to helping veterans who do not experience relief from current standard PTSD treatments. These dogs can also be trained to assist veterans who experience mobility issues such as a spinal injury or Traumatic brain injuries with picking up a dropped hat, opening doors, and assisting with balance.

Armstrong has made great efforts so far such as The Clinton Bike Run which pulled in $8,000 in donations in June, The Hallmark Kitten Bowl Facebook Event ($2,500), the Carved Dog Raffle ($2,460 to date), and Dan’s Dogs Promotion ($797), among others.

Bill Fennel, a Vietnam Veteran from Carnegie PA, described to KDKA the change after receiving his service dog as, “… a new life for me, a beginning.” He then went on to pronounce his dog Faith as his “Best Friend”. Veterans located within any county serviced by Armstrong are eligible for the program and do not need to be an Armstrong customer. Armstrong would like to thank everyone who has participated and donated thus far in the effort to increase the quality of life of the many men and women who have served our country and who continue to serve as citizens. To be a part of a community that is so compassionate is truly inspiring.
